The Project is a registered charity that looks to help every young person in the Berwick area be the best that they can be!
The Project opened in 1995, after concerns that many young people found it difficult to get help and support in the local area and since then the services have expanded rapidly to create the multi-functional service that it is today.
Originally the Project began life in a rented shop property near Berwick railway station, and following lots of enquiries from young people, the project launched its first housing project in 1997 in partnership with Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust.
In 2002, after several years of fund-raising, the Project relocated to new premises in Golden Square. Built on the site of a former petrol-station, this new building has three separate facilities under one roof:
The Beehive Youth Club (Originally a young persons’ cafe).
Supported Accommodation (with 6 bedsits onsite in addition to the 5 bedsits off-site).
Information and Support ‘shop’
In 2003 Berwick Youth Project began partnership working with the management committee of the Wooler Drop-In.
In 2004 changes to the funding arrangements for the County Council’s Youth Service led to a unique partnership between the Youth Project, Berwick High School and Northumberland County Council. From then the Project extended its services to provide youth work out-with office hours, through youth clubs, as a additional service to the information and support ‘shop’.
In 2006 this partnership was extended to cover the areas served by Glendale Middle School and Belford Middle School and Berwick Youth Project began running Glendale Youth Club and Belford Youth Club.
And today Berwick Youth Project continues to develop the range of services that are available to local young people. Check out the rest of our site or get in touch to find out more!
